ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Weld and Standards Trainer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and delivering weld training programs in compliance with American Welding Society (AWS) and Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) standards. This role provides additional quality assurance (QA) training as required within the division and mentors ONTC employees in welding techniques, safety practices, and industry standards to ensure compliance and operational excellence.

The Weld and Standards Trainer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and delivering weld training programs in compliance with American Welding Society (AWS) and Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) standards. This role provides additional quality assurance (QA) training as required within the division and mentors ONTC employees in welding techniques, safety practices, and industry standards to ensure compliance and operational excellence.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, maintain, and execute the ONTC Weld Program to ensure compliance with AWS and CWB requirements.
- Conduct final weld inspections on completed work within all applicable divisions (e.g., Truck Shop, Fabrication Shop, Outside Repair, Car Shop).
- Train and mentor employees in welding techniques, safety practices, and industry standards.
- Administer theory and practical tests for welding and QA training.
- Proactively schedule and coordinate weld and QA training sessions as required.
- Maintain and deliver QA standards training programs, including M1003 and other industry requirements.
- Develop instructional materials and hands-on learning activities to support training programs.
- Provide feedback and informal assessments to help trainees improve their skills.
- Support and guide employees during in-class and practical training sessions.
- Maintain accurate training logs and records for weld and QA programs.
- Collaborate with team members and divisions to meet training and compliance requirements.
- Consult with external Weld Engineers on process-related queries.
REQUIREMENTS:
- College diploma in Welding Techniques or Welding Fabrication.
- CWB weld tickets in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW are mandatory.
- CWI Level II or higher and VT Level II or higher certifications are preferred.
- 3–5 years of recent welding experience, including MIG, TIG, Stick, and flux core techniques; reading blueprints and welding symbols; operating grinders, saws, drills, and measuring tools (e.g., calipers).
- Experience teaching or mentoring others in welding techniques, safety, and industry standards.
- 2–3 years of experience in training administration and weld inspection, including Certified Welding Inspector Level II and Nondestructive Testing (Visual Testing) Level II, is preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support instructional duties.
- Ability to engage trainees of varying skill levels with respect and encouragement.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Commitment to health and safety.
