ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Disability & Attendance Management Specialist is responsible for administering the 
organization's disability and attendance management programs. This role involves collaborating 
with Human Resources Business Partners to develop return to work plans and medical 
accommodations. The Specialist will work with employees, managers, healthcare providers, and 
external stakeholders to ensure the efficient processing of short-term disability claims and the 
effective administration of the attendance management program.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage all non-occupational short-term disability and weekly indemnity claims from start to end, including working with Human Resources Business Partner and Managers to foster early and safe return to work opportunities
  • Ensure fair and consistent application of policy, legislation, collective agreement provisions, and best practices
  • Ensure benefits provided to employees during their disability period are accurate and based on their entitlement as per their collective agreement or the policy
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders such as managers and 3rd party adjudicators regarding short-term disability claims and accommodations
  • Timely transition of the employee through the different stages of leave continuum 
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure cohesive disability management and identify and assess potential risks related to workplace disabilities and develop mitigation strategies 
  • Communicate effectively with employees, management, union representatives, and other stakeholders to address concerns and provide updates
  • Administer and maintain attendance management processes including the consistent and fair application and utilization of forms/templates 
  • Provide informed or data-driven recommendations for changes or improvements in relevant policies, procedures, and programs
  • Maintain disability management and attendance support programs and policies to enhance support and efficiency
  • Collect and analyze absenteeism data, identify employees who exceed the absenteeism threshold for enrollment in the attendance management and support program 
  • Monitor employees’ progress while on the program, providing timely updates to HRBPs and managers as required

REQUIREMENTS:
  • University degree in Human Resources Management
  • CHRP and/or CDMP (Certified Disability Management Professional) designation is preferred
  • 2 -3 years’ experience in disability claims management 
  • 2 -3 years’ experience in attendance management 
  • At least 2 years of work experience in human resources support roles in a unionized environment
  • Experience working with collective agreements is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of disability management best practices
  • Understanding of employment related legislation such as: Canada Labour Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Canadian Human Rights Act, and Accessibility legislation
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation
  • Available for occasional travel within ONTC service territory
  • Coaching abilities to provide advice and guidance to all levels of management and other employees
  • Ability to engage, manage difficult conversations and influence outcomes
  • Ability to successfully manage timelines, keeping in mind the needs of the business
  • Commitment to health and safety
