Join Ontario Northland at a pivotal time as we expand our rail network into the Muskoka Region through the newly acquired 128‑mile Newmarket Subdivision, connecting our current operations in North Bay to Washago. This strategic corridor enhances our ability to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient passenger and freight service across northeastern Ontario. As a qualified Locomotive Engineer or Freight Conductor, you will play a critical frontline role in supporting Rail Operations, ensuring compliance with operating rules, maintaining situational awareness, and contributing to the seamless movement of trains across our network.

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
This position will work alongside two or three person train crews in a safety-focused, supportive work environment, ensuring the safe arrival of passengers and freight to its destination. Whether it’s switching cars, splitting, or moving cars between yards, sidings or tracks. Successful candidates will bring strong operating experience, a commitment to safety, and the ability to adapt within a growing network. You will support operational readiness, respond to evolving service needs, and uphold high standards of professionalism and teamwork. 

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safely operate throughout Ontario Northland’s rail network using Occupancy Control System (OCS) clearances and CTC
  • Work in either freight, passenger or yard service depending on seniority
  • Coordination and supervision of passenger and freight train crew activities to ensure train operations remain on schedule and are in accordance with Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
  • Ensure train orders are received in good order, in accordance with CROR and effectively communicate the orders to brakemen/women, locomotive engineer and other crew members
  • Handling the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and able to lift out coupling device
  • Ride moving equipment by hanging onto grab irons or ladder, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Communicate with train crew members by radio, signals or by other means to give and receive train operation information
  • Perform conductor duties on our mixed freight passenger train between Cochrane and Moosonee
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and achieve efficient operations
  • Interrupt train orders and switch lists and prepares required clear and legible reports
  • Works in accordance with Ontario Northland Policies and Procedures, CROR, and Transport Canada Rules and Regulations 
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) 
  • Previous experience as a Conductor or Locomotive Engineer 
  • Valid Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
  • On call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week 
  • Must pass physical, hearing and visual examinations as well as pre-employment drug/alcohol testing
  • Must be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and to travel over rough terrain
  • Valid G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • May be required to lift up to 80 lbs
  • Travel frequently and be away from home for extended periods of time
  • Good decision and problem solving skills 
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to Health and Safety
