ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Transportation Planner is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing routes and schedules to ensure efficient, reliable, and customer-focused transportation services. This role involves analyzing ridership data, optimizing service schedules, and balancing customer convenience with operational resources, all while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Utilize transportation modeling tools to forecast travel patterns and assess system impacts.
• Analyze ridership trends, including peak times, popular routes, and passenger demographics.
• Evaluate and optimize routes and schedules based on ridership, accessibility, cost, and infrastructure.
• Assess service frequency to ensure alignment with demand and planning guidelines.
• Develop integrated, multimodal transportation strategies to enhance connectivity and passenger experience.
• Adjust service plans for seasonal changes, detours, or disruptions.
• Conduct traffic and transportation studies to identify trends and inform planning.
• Collaborate with Operations to ensure proposed changes are feasible and align with workforce capacity.
• Prepare operator work assignments in accordance with schedules and collective bargaining agreements.
• Monitor and analyze KPIs such as ridership, reliability, on-time performance, and customer satisfaction.
• Identify service reliability issues (e.g., traffic, boarding times) and recommend schedule adjustments.
• Collect and organize data, collaborating with Business Intelligence to develop actionable reports.
• Create visualizations and summaries to communicate KPI insights and operational performance.
• Provide data-driven recommendations to optimize service and address deficiencies.
• Ensure KPI tracking systems are accurate, relevant, and aligned with strategic goals.
• Maintain regulatory compliance and prepare documentation for schedule changes requiring approval.
• Coordinate with Customer Experience to communicate service updates and disruptions.
• Support complaint investigations and compliance reporting with data insights.
• Draft stakeholder communications, including updates, recommendations, and policy summaries.
• Present findings and recommendations in meetings and workshops.
• Ensure professional, consistent communication with internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist in preparing business cases, feasibility studies, and operational reports.
• Stay informed on transportation regulations, innovations, and best practices, and share insights with the team.
REQUIREMENTS:
• University degree in urban planning, Transportation Planning, Business Administration, Data Analytics, or a related field
• 2–3 years of experience in transportation planning, with a focus on operations, route evaluation, or policy development.
• Proficient in analyzing transportation data, including ridership trends and operational metrics.
• Hands-on experience with transportation modeling software and data visualization tools (e.g., GIS, Excel, Power BI and SQL); familiarity with scheduling software, CAD/AVL systems, and real-time tracking tools.
• 1–2 years of experience with transportation regulations, policies, and best practices.
• Exposure to projects involving the coordination of multiple transportation modes.
• Experience managing transportation-related projects with both internal and external stakeholders.
• Knowledge of AODA accessibility standards, transportation regulations, and MTO policies.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn data insights into actionable recommendations.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, including experience drafting briefing notes, reports, and operational documents.
• Demonstrated commitment to health and safety standards.
