ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Internal Audit Specialist is responsible for supporting the achievement of the organization's objectives through the assessment and improvement of internal controls spanning all areas of finance operations, including compliance.

The Internal Audit Specialist is responsible for supporting the achievement of the organization's objectives through the assessment and improvement of internal controls spanning all areas of finance operations, including compliance.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead or support a variety of audit projects in the areas of governance, financial management, risk assessment, information systems and compliance
- Plan and perform risk assessments to determine and develop detailed objectives and scope for each assigned audit including development of risk and control matrix
- Evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls and recommend improvements
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures including adherence to provincial directives and regulations
- Prepare detailed audit reports summarizing findings, risks, and recommendations for management
- Leads and/or contributes to the communication and negotiation of audit observations and internal control deficiencies through the review of draft reports with stakeholders, presenting issues to relevant stakeholders/management and proposing appropriate, cost-beneficial and practical recommendations
- Collaborate with the audit manager to present and report final audit results to stakeholders, including relevant department heads and senior management
- Conduct follow-up procedures to ensure identified issues have been adequately addressed
- Contributes to ongoing continuous improvement in internal audit services by keeping current on new developments in the profession, identifying improvement opportunities and involvement in continuous improvement activities
- University Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- CPA with audit training or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation preferred
- 2-3 year’s experience in similar role
- Experience with end-to-end financial reporting and financial statement close processes
- Knowledge of internal control development, implementation, monitoring and maintenance
- Internal audit / audit procedure knowledge and ability to design and perform audit procedures
- Strong understanding of public sector accounting principles and full cycle accounting processes
- Organizational and time management skills, including balancing multiple priorities and tasks
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical abilities, and a strong attention to detail
- Competency with MS Office and Finance ERP systems
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must have good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and in a team oriented, collaborative environment
- Must be committed to Health and Safety
