ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Financial Accountant is responsible for supporting the organization’s objectives through financial reporting, internal audit, internal controls, cross-departmental collaboration, and participation in special projects.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the development and implementation of internal controls across finance operations to help achieve ONTC’s objectives.
- Prepare internal control monitoring reports and recommend remediation for identified deficiencies.
- Perform period-end close tasks, including preparing and posting journal entries with accurate GL coding.
- Review adjusting journal entries to ensure proper documentation and approval protocols.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations to ensure records align with the accounting system.
- Maintain General Ledger account structures across financial applications.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls over financial reporting.
- Respond to internal and external audit requests related to financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly/quarterly filings such as HST, QST, and IFTA returns.
- Support internal audit activities and monitor adherence to recommendations through periodic reviews.
- Perform scheduled procedures and report findings, including organizational impacts.
- Identify and assess procedural weaknesses to recommend improvements.
- Act as a liaison between Finance and other departments to support communication and workflow efficiency
- Contribute to initiatives and ad hoc projects, including system upgrades and process improvements.
- Provide financial insights, technical support, and subject matter expertise to ensure alignment with reporting and control requirements.
- Perform special assignments and other duties as required by the Manager, Accounting and the Director, Financial Services
REQUIREMENTS:
- University degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation preferred or in progress.
- 2-3 years of experience in a similar financial or accounting role.
- Experience with end-to-end financial reporting and financial statement close processes.
- Knowledge of internal control frameworks, including development, implementation, monitoring and maintenance.
- Proficiency in cash flow management, forecasting, and borrowing.
- Strong understanding of public sector accounting principles and full-cycle accounting.
- Competency in Microsoft Office and financial ERP systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical abilities with strong attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to health and safety.
