ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Supervisor, Maintenance of Way (MOW) is responsible in ensuring the overall safety of the track territory assigned. They conduct risk assessments on a daily basis in regard to the safety of the track, assign and oversee repairs and deal with any employee issues. They are responsible in ensuring a safe track structure to maintain efficient train operations (freight and passenger).

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan/Assign/Oversee/Verify that work is completed to standard, and that track is safe for train operations.
  • Perform inspections on all aspects of the track structure including turnouts, culverts, roadbed, crossing surfaces, crossing sightlines and other potential hazards.
  • Reports and documents all inspections findings and corrective and/or protective action.
  • Analyze risk on a daily basis and determine course of action to protect train operations.
  • Ensure regulatory requirements for their territories are completed and inspections are logged into inspection system.
  • Work with and coordinate track maintenance with internal/external customers including MTO and municipalities as to not interrupt their operations.
  • Ensure proper billing of third-party work is completed.
  • Investigate and report on all injuries/incidents that occur on their assigned territory and provide/implement corrective actions
  • Verify and approve all work hours, vacation and sick days for the work crews working on their assigned territory.
  • Deal with union issues related to their assigned territories (grievances, work rules, etc.) and provide input to bargaining committee on work rule changes.
  • Complete regularly scheduled inspections of bunkhouses, tool-houses, fire equipment, and ensure Health and Safety bulletin boards are organized and up to date. 
  • Complete work observations of work crews to ensure compliance to safe work procedures and workplace policies.
  • Attend health and safety meetings/tailgate meetings
  • Educate employees, on their assigned territories, of any hazards or trends related to safety.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possess a Technical College diploma, preferably in the civil engineering or construction management field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Qualified or ability to become qualified in Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
  • Certified or ability to be certified in Track Inspection
  • Minimum 5 years' track work or track engineering related experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years' managing a workforce, planning, executing, and overseeing work.
  • Expert knowledge of inspection and construction practices
  • Good computer skills are a definite asset
  • Must have excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Committed to company health and safety 
  • Must be able to adapt to changing priorities and workloads and be available to work some off-hours emergency calls and irregular working hours, i.e. daily starting and quitting times must be flexible
  • Experience working unaccompanied with considerable outdoor exposure in all weather conditions
  • Must be available to travel frequently, approximately 90% of the time
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
